Swerea is looking for students within software engineering or an IT consulting company for a project regarding Digital Certification for 3D Printed Metal Components.

About the consultant work:

Digital Certification for 3D Printed Metal Components

Background:
Additive manufacturing (AM) is relatively a young production technology and is rapidly growing. In recent years, AM has received great attention and, development in this area has been extremely fast. However, despite the rapid growth of the industry and development of new and more efficient AM machines, the technology has not been adopted as fast (as one would think) by the manufacturing sector; particularly for production of metallic components. One reason for the sluggish acceptance of metal 3D printing is insufficient product knowledge.

Objective:
The aim of this project is to create a digital platform where 3D printing process data (for a given component) can be stored and accessed in a smart way. This will serve as digital certification of the produced component which can then be handed over to the customer.

Process data can be divided into:
• Pre-process data
o Data on raw material: e.g. powder size, condition, etc
• In-process data from every layer
o Temperature, recordings from oxygen sensor, digital images of every layer, etc
• Post-process data
o Post machining operation or heat treatment.

Challenge:
A large amount of process data is created and recorded; however, they are not structure in an organized way.

We would like to be able to store all process data, digitally and in one place. It should also be possible to search the stored data. For example, the software should allow the user to search data collected for each layer. This will allow the user to identify the exact layer(s) (in the component) which have experienced an abnormal condition (e.g. temperature) during the production of the part.
