IT-Championship in Strava training!

Good afternoon, fellow IT-students!

In connection with the ongoing CM in Strava, frITid has created four year-exclusive Strava clubs where we can compete against each other within the section. It is thus a competition between IT1, IT2, IT3 and IT-Master! The year that manages to collect the most hours until February 28, the day when the CM ends, is awarded three prizes while the remaining years are awarded one prize each. The prizes will be awarded to one (or many) lucky person(s) that are in the upper half of the leaderboard of their year. During the competition, we will count one hour total of training as a workout, which means that it is possible to spread out the training load nicely. For instance, two half-hour workouts are equally valued as one full-hour workout. The more training hours, the greater the chance of being awarded a prize!

Hope you are as eager as we are to participate and be a part of deciding which year has the strongest training spirit! On Monday (21/12) the competition begins, so make sure to join the Strava club that represents your year + the club IT-Chalmers in order for all training hours to be included in the ongoing CM!

Safety Inspections, Autumn term 2020

0 | 9 December | Permalink | Written for styrIT by putte

Hello hello!

The autumn safety inspection took place last week and for those of you who occasionally study on campus, you can expect that broken lights, chairs and other things will be fixed soon. For the buildings EDIT and Jupiter, several group rooms have been under renovation this year, in addition to this more electrical outlets are inserted in classrooms and old chairs are replaced by new ones.

Our division rooms Hubben and The Cloud were reviewed without any major remarks. The good news is that we will have a carbon filter replaced for the kitchen fan in Hubben, which will make it more pleasant to cook, and the chairs in the study room will be replaced at the beginning of next year. With that said, we were told that people were studying too closely in Hubben. In this, we all need to help each other out and follow the guidelines and markings that exist. The tables have clear indications of how many people are allowed to sit at each table and where, please respect these so that together we can keep down the risk of infection spreading. In addition, there is surface disinfection in the cleaning cabinet where we are all expected to spray the surfaces we use before we go.

If you have more questions and thoughts about the safety rounds, you can contact SAMO at samo@chalmers.it.

In other respects, if you discover something broken or risky in your study environment, you can email it to 8800@chalmers.se and most things can usually be resolved immediately. Can be small or large. Things that are difficult to detect on the safety rounds are, for example, poor ventilation and broken electrical outlets, so email if you discover anything!

Christmas Greetings,
styrIT, via Carolina (SAMO)

Hello!

Applications for Mentor EDIT are now open!

What is it?
Mentor EDIT (also called MEDIT) is a one-year mentorship programme at Chalmers aimed for students in years 2–5 in the MSc programmes Electrical Engineering, Computer Science Engineering and Software Engineering ( E, D och IT Civilingenjörsprogram ).

Both parties can benefit greatly from a mentorship relationship. The mentorship can be considered a partnership for learning that gives the mentor the opportunity to share their experiences. The mentor is also given the opportunity for self-reflection in dialogue with their mentee, and training in direct leadership in forms where humility, openness and being a team player are the foundation of the relationship. Through their mentor, the mentee is given the opportunity to reflect over thoughts and ideas, figure out what motivates them, and receive moral support and career guidance.

The Mentor EDIT mentorship programme is a collaboration between the Master of Science programmes in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science Engineering and Software Engineering ( 300 cr. ) at Chalmers and Swedish Association of Electrical and Computer Engineers (SER).

Application
The application is open until January 21, 2021 and you apply via our website www.mentoredit.se.

We in styrIT as well as the speaker for the student division meeting will try to be as pedagogical as possible about what is happening during the meeting. However, it could be that we miss something and in the end it is the responsibility of each student division member to know how a meeting works.

The rules of a student division meeting can be found in the link, from page five and forward. If something is unclear just ask, and we will do our best to answer.

Contents of the meeting

A draft of the agenda will be published on chalmers.it at the latest of five days before the meeting together with the meeting documents. Below there are some meeting points that will surely occur during the meeting

Chalmers Championships in virtual exercise

0 | 26 November | Permalink | Written for frITid by Janpon

virtual_cm_final
What’s crackin’ y’all! During these gloomy times when no ordinary Chalmers Championships can be arranged, CIS has decided to try and help student division members keep their motivation to exercise intact by arranging the Chalmers Championship in virtual exercise. We in frITid hope that many of you are excited to participate to win a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious prize for the IT student division. To join the challenge, you need to download and register an account in the app Strava and then join IT’s club: IT-Chalmers. That being done, you are free to exercise on your own so that we can beat all other student divisions together! More information and rules from CIS can be found in the description below. Now it’s time to once and for all show that IT is the superior student division in all ways possible; even exercise!

So, make sure to download the Strava app and rest yourselves until the 1st of December when the competition commences

Competition rules:

There will be two categories to compete in:

  1. Chalmers Championship in virtual exercise goes to the student division that exercises the most hours in total.
  2. The Commitment Prize goes to the student division that engages the largest proportion of their students measured with the equation: Exercise hours * Total registered athletes/Total students in the student division.
  • Prizes will be rewarded to the two student divisions that gather the most hours in both categories during the period 1 December 2020 - 28 February 2021.
  • Participants can exercise in any way they want as long as the exercise hours are measurable in Strava. So you can run, walk, cycle, swim, etc.
  • The CIS board is the sole judge in the competition.
  • Results will be picked out by the CIS Board every Sunday after 21:00 (This is because the Strava app changes the clubs' statistics every Sunday at 23:59)
  • To follow FHM's recommendations, all training in this competition must take place individually and in places without crowding. For example, the student division’s sports committee may not gather groups to earn hours.
  • Each student division may register one Strava club each.
  • Participants may only join one of the student division’s clubs. If participants join more clubs, results will be recorded in each one.

It is going to be fun, but above all... amusing!

Machine Learning Implementation in Microsoft Azure on Structured Engine Data

A2020_7913

[Master Thesis-jobb på engelska]

-In collaboration with Volvo Penta-

Thesis background
Today we have structured data ready and have now started to look into what possibilities this enables. These possibilities includes running machine learning algorithms on our data. We would therefore like you to investigate what algorithms can be run on this data, and what issues we need to address. As a first project we would like to implement automatic detection of engine driving cycles. These drive cycles will later be used to optimize electro mobility drivetrains and systems including need of range extender and charging schedules.

Thesis scope of work
Aim
The aim of this thesis work is to identify and implement ML algorithms on real data that is received from Penta engines for the purpose of identifying engine driving cycles.

First step
For this you will need to examine:
• Data that is sent from our Penta engines, ie time resolution and diagnostics data
• How data from different teams, eg Diagnostics team, Test cell, after market and Volvo Group Trucks Technology (GTT) can be integrated with our data.
• If we have enough and correct data to get engine driving cycles

Based on this examination, implement appropriate ML algorithms for engine driving cycle detection and, if times allows, other applications.

Second step
• What other ML algorithms can be suitable to run on our engine data.
• Future ML possibilities or ideas for Penta 6 months/3 years.

Nominate to the Pedagogical Prize!

0 | 6 November | Permalink | Written for snIT by Tant

Hi everyone!

Each year the student division and the Program board awards the Pedagogical Prize to the person who has done the most in the form of pedagogical contributions during the past year. The pedagogical prize includes, apart from the great honor of receiving it, a substantial check. We need your help in this matter! Send us your nomination for the person you think is worthy of the price. It can be a teacher, student or anything in between that you feel has made a large pedagogical contribution during the calendar year 2020 (VT20 - HT20). The winner will be chosen among the nominees by a jury that snIT will compose.

Usually the Pedagocical Prize also includes a glamorous dinner party, due to the prevailing situation with covid-19 it is very possible that this will not occur this year. We still plan to have some form of ceremony, more on that when we know more.

Innovation in small and big companies

The time has finally come, Speaker's week is back. Because of the circumstances, all of this year's lectures will be held online.

First out this year is Ericsson. The lecture will be held by Lars-Erik Lindberg and he will speak about innovation in small and big companies.

Time: Monday 9/11 at 12:00-13:00
Place: Microsoft Teams

Follow the event on Facebook so your are updated with further info and the link for the meeting.

Description
What kind of innovation and how the innovation is created looks different in a big company in comparison with a smaller one. Nevertheless do these complement each other and there is a mutual dependence, or more positively expressed: a win-win situation. I will describe how Ericsson manages different kinds of innovation and how we cooperate with smaller companies and give an insight into why small companies have a large and important role in the innovation within larger companies. From my own experiences and give my opinion on the differences between working within the different innovation processes, and cultures.

Everyone who attends the lecture will get a free lunch ticket for the Kårrestaurangen!

Some further information
